| every which way plaid scrap binding |
I cut the strips 2.25" inches wide instead of my usual 2" because the fabrics in the quilt top are all so much thicker than quilting cotton. We've already decided this quilt will be hand quilted. I followed the binding tutorial HERE to piece it all end to end on the diagonal. It's awesome and all ready to go! : )

That seemed to be a surprising amount of binding from just one shirt, but then I remembered a nifty chart from Victoriana Quilt Designs which gives the yardage requirements for bindings for different sizes of quilts, and a king sized quilt needs just a yard. There are several yards in a shirt....

Monika, I saw the little pic on the WIP page and thought you had taken up making HATS!! It looked like some kind of turban affair. I think I have been cutting teensy things too long today. Time to cease and desist! Amazing amount of binding- and potentially, an amazing chapeau😌

Love that you are using a shirt for binding! I made so many of my childrens' clothes from clothing items we no longer wore. And then passed them along to others to use! And I have a rubbermaid full of some of my favorite clothing items cut into usable pieces for future projects.
Great idea to use a shirt to create binding! I have put some 'random' strips together to create binding for some donation quilts -- I think I did at least 40 feet, maybe more! It is one of my favourite parts of the quilt process, it means the quilt is almost done!
Nobody has commented on the way you join the binding ends and how it always turns out perfect no matter the width of the binding. I learned to do it like that too. I don't remember where either but I find that it's not a well known method. Good for you that you found it too!!
Plaid binding will be lovely, and all that from one shirt! There must have been a lot of piecing. I always cut my binding at 2.5, then trim from my seam allowance 1/2 to puff it up a bit.
