I took my middle child out to Beaver Creek with his friends for a birthday party / nature hike. The photo above is from the point of view of the 'green trail' atop a cliff overlooking the creek. (yesyes I will be stitching this!) Can anyone i.d. the grasses? I knew them once but forgot. Red fescue!?
Off to feed the chickadees! |
I love taking photos and realizing creatures are hidden amongst the grasses! : )
Also, I saw my first sandhill crane! I love when wild birds come close. My gosh does it EVER look like a prehistoric creature! Unbelievable. It felt like a scene from Jurassic Park. The lone crane walked up the creek very, very slowly - stopping to quirk it's head to the side as if to say, "really??" It came all the way up to us on the bridge and then it took to flight. It spread its wings and flapped them ever so gracefully. It moved slow through the air. It was weird! It was hardly moving, yet it was flying. My littlest and I were totally mesmerized (and far out of reach of my camera). If you have time to google the Sandhill Crane, you should! I found this little youtube video here. They make a strange loud sound that reminds me of a cross between a turkey and a pigeon. They dance too. lol.
ps - if you are squeamish about grasshoppers, maybe don't head out there. The place is LOADED with them.

Bela comemoração de aniversário!
Esta gramínea se transformará em um lindo bordado nas suas mãos.
A ave é muito interessante. Aqui, no Brasil, temos uma parecida: a "seriema" mas, ela não dança.
Um abraço!

Beautiful birthday celebration!
This grass will turn into a beautiful embroidery in your hands.
The bird is very interesting. Here in Brasil, we have a similar one: a "seriema" but she does not dance.
Hugs!

Can't wait to see it in your design! I'm sure it will be lovely! Love the photos.
Love your grasses photo! And we get the sandhill cranes here too. Often they are flying overhead but so high I can only hear them; can't see them. (I'm sure it has nothing to do with being over 40 ha!)
There have been lots of Sandhills cranes flying over our area for the last week or so. You know autumn is near when you hear them calling from on high.
It is wonderful that you take your child for a hike for his birthday. Very unique these days. Great fun and memories for him and great pictures for you too!
Love the photos! My husband is a grass expert and says the grass is Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium). There is a Little and a Big Bluestem and they both are reddish!
