My Next Move

This is the BIG show that got me hooked, thanks to my friend Jennifer who invited me to this event.  She knew I loved her sewing room & wanted to learn to make a quilt, and she knew I would see beautiful things here.  Well, it worked.  I joined the guild, and 2 years later I put some items into the marketplace there but was too afraid to enter a quilt.

This show happens biennially.  The next one is this fall.  It's been 4 years now, and I am still afraid to do it!  But then I got to thinking...  you know I love doing this:

...because I love taking photos of this...

But do you recall how head over heals I was for this?  I was smitten.

So then I saw this from an old Threads magazine...

I'm noticing that panel around the torso... hmmm... looks like a blank canvas to me.

I'm thinking I need a prairie dress.  I'm imagining...

just beginning to play with ideas here

inspired by my cell phone drive-by-shooting of this...

Can I pull it off?  A Prairie Dress has an 'intent to enter' in the wearable section of the biennial show.  I was going to keep it a surprise, but I suck at keeping secrets.  Plus, I could use your support since I have never sewn a garment before.  !?  : )  You just never know until you try!

Go for it!!! I think it looks amazing so far. Oh, and maybe a solid-ish skirt with another landscape (with your beautiful wildflowers) at the bottom?

I am glad you didn't keep it a secret. I can't wait to see how it comes together.

OMG! Brilliant!! I LOVE the idea! You GOT to do it. I've always used a pattern sewing garments. If you can sew a quilt, you can sew a dress! Don't let the curves scare you. Clothes also come together so much faster than a big quilt! Probably the hardest part is that you can't try it on first to see how the style (and sizing) will look on you. So use a style (neck line, length, sleeve style, etc) that you KNOW looks good on you. I think that's the most important thing. Also, start out with something that isn't very "fitted". Zippers and buttons are easy once you get a few under your belt (no pun intended LOL). Good luck! Can't wait to see the finished product!!

wow, what an amazing idea!! You are so creative. I have done lots of clothing before, so will certainly help out if you get stuck with something!

I'm really pretty glad that surprises aren't your thing, because that dress is going to be great! I like how you are making it prairie inspired too!
