Another New Gadget

I have been unable to free motion quilt on my new Janome 7700.  The tension is wonky - bottom thread too tight, top thread loose & loopy.  I didn't have these issues with my beloved 4900.  I manually change the tensions but in the back of my mind, I'm sure that I should not have to.  I phoned a local dealer to inquire, and apparently the 6500, 6600, 1100, and 7700 all have these:

marked with a blue arrow.  the regular bobbin is red.

I've been wanting to get a second bobbin case.  So there ya go.  This one is apparently pre-set for a lower bobbin tension to accommodate for FMQ.  I haven not tried it yet, but am anxiously awaiting the moment of truth.  This better work!  IN the mean time, I've spent nearly a half year doing straight line quilting only.  I did some curls in the the sky of Mandy's piece and pulled it all out again.

Here's a few more teasers for the summer retro boy's quilt I'm doing for A Needle Pulling Thread magazine...

That's all folks!  I'm back to the studio...  nearly done this top!!

thanks monika! i've had such trouble with fmq and thought it was just because i was such a klutz...and i have a 6500....

Really!? Geeze. That's just not fair is it!? The preset bobbin is around $30CAD or so. They did suggest that the machine tech can set or reset it for you if you already own a second bobbin case. WEIRD. Let me know how it goes!?

I have the same machine and have a bit of trouble, but like Molly thought it was my fault. I did adjust the tension and it seemed ok, but haven't done much so we will see. I did go today and bought the open toe duel feed foot you had mentioned before. YEAH! There is also a 1/4 inch duel feed foot for our machine, but they were on order.

p.s. As a newbie is there a reason that I would want a second bobbin casing....apart from this free motion one?

Your 1/4" accufeed foot is on order because I bought that one too! : ) I cant' wait to put on a binding with that baby! : ) Block piecing wasn't thrilling. IT says to set your needle to the 5.5 postition, but I had to set it for 6 to get a 1/4 inch seam.

2nd bobbin case... wait for Tips on Tuesdays! ; ) All on Bobbins & Bobbin related topics.

It's funny you mention bobbin tension issues with free motion. I have something going on with my bottom tension (bottom thread that is). I should post a picture, but bet you probably know what it is right away. Not sure they make a fancy bobbin for my old old machine, but I will have to look into it. Your teasers are gorgeous!

send a pic Christine!
And no - you are probably not klutzes! The only reason I pushed and asked questions is because I know I could do it flawlessly on my 4900. Weird though - why doesn't the manual state you need that!!??! I almost gave up.

Thanks for the info. I just got my Horizon a couple of weeks before Christmas and haven't had a chance to play with it till yesterday, the very day of your posting. Haven't tried freemotion yet, but this info will likely save me some grief. Thanks again.

I also have a 7700 and it FMQ's better than my 6500 did without changing anything. But I keep hearing about the "blue" bobbin case so I am very eager to hear how it works for you.

I have a 6500 and bought the blue bobbin case over a year ago. It works great, well worth the money.
